A writing burst is defined as the number of words you can write, before pausing for two seconds or more. A two second pause will restart the burst count. It is important to note that burst measurements have nothing to do with typing speed. The slowest typers can maintain a long burst count as long as they aren't pausing. Research shows that the longer a writer's average burst becomes, the quality of the writing goes up.
