If they are using an email outside of Google, Microsoft, Canvas, Schoology, Yahoo, etc, they need to confirm their identity. The only way to do this is to email the student and then have them confirm they are who they say they are (otherwise, anyone could create an account with anyone else's email).  The OpenID providers give us a way to verify identity without an email.
